Occupational First Aid Level 1 (OFA 1)

This course is for persons requiring the WorkSafeBC (WCB of BC) minimum workplace certification. It has been developed by panel of medical experts and educators, designed to meet the Industrial (Occupational) First Aid needs of British Columbia. The students receive instruction in Priority Action Approach, Artificial Respiration, Choking, Adult CPR, Control of Severe Bleeding, Shock, and Minor wound Care. Burns, Eye Injuries, and Introduction to WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) are also included.


Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a WorkSafeBC B.C. Workers’ Compensation Board Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 Certificate, valid for three years. Students must be minimum 16 years of age, picture ID and physically capable of performing skills to meet WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 course objectives.

 

Program Length: 7 hours

Program Topics:

  • Priority Action Approach (to the end of the primary survey) for conscious patients and patients with a decreased level of consciousness.

  • Interventions for minor soft tissue injuries including the need for medical referral and be able to accurately complete the required documentation (First Aid Record). This will include specific management of eye injuries, burns and workplace poisoning.

  • Identify and correctly perform critical interventions of the airway with C-spine control for conscious patients and patients with a decreased level of consciousness.

  • Respiratory emergencies and manage critical interventions. Each participant will describe how to identify and assess, provide care, and treatments for asthmatic conditions and anaphylactic shock.

  • Identify circulatory emergencies and correctly perform critical interventions. Each participant will have an awareness of the role and duties of an Occupational First Aid Attendant in the workplace.

  • Identify and assess, provide care, and treatments for stroke, diabetic conditions, seizures, and fainting.

Upon successful completion of the written exam with a minimum score of 70%, you will receive a Certificate of Completion that is valid for three years.

Transportation Endorsement (TE)

Students must have a valid OFA Level 1 Certificate (Bring to Class)

This course provides students with patient handling and lifting techniques, spine board and basket stretcher immobilization techniques, patient assessment and treatment during transport, and applicable first aid regulations.

 

Program Length:  8 hours

 

Program Topics:

 

  • Patient handling techniques with spinal precautions to initially move an injured worker.

  • Prepare patients for transport in the supine and lateral positions. The procedures should not take longer than 15 minutes from the approach to the patient and will follow the guidelines in the Industrial First Aid Reference and Training Manual.
